We will explain the process of Piwik Pro content performance using Google Tag Manager.
The process doesn’t differ much from tracking content in GA4, aside from the fact that Piwik Pro has a very decent GTM template you can use.
Just starting out with Piwik Pro?
If you are just creating your Piwik Pro account, please read our Guide to configure the basic tag before moving forward with the article.
Content Impression Tag in Piwik Pro
Open Google Tag Manager (GTM). In the tag library template, search for Piwik Pro and add it to your workspace.
Next, we need to select the template type using the drop-down menu.
2 Steps To Track Content Performance in Piwik Pro
Notice that Piwik Pro offers 2 distinct tag templates for each purpose. We need to first track content impression before moving to content interaction.
All we really need to do is fill in the information for each parameter in the tag template. I will use data layers to supply my tag with each parameter’s value.
Data Layers to Track Content
I highly recommend using data layers if you have access to a developer. You can fetch any information from the web page without risking losing it if you change the page’s structure.
The template has 3 essential parameters:
- Content name: this could be as simple as “article” or a specific content block (i.e., “newsletter”).
- Content piece: this is the name of the content piece. Taking our earlier example, it can be the actual name of the article or the name of the email newsletter.
- Content target: this can be the link to the content piece itself or another element, depending on the content you are tracking.
Example: Track Blog Performance
I will trigger this tag on each article page impression.
Content Interaction Tag in Piwik Pro
The process for tracking interactions is more or less the same.
Tip: Copy tags for faster implementation
You copy your tag by clicking on the 3 dots on the top right corner of your tag template.
Our goal with article interaction template is to record all clicks when the user is reading an article. You can create multiple tag templates to track other behaviors like scrolling and form submissions.
Analyzing content Performance using Piwik pro UI
Most of our work is done. To analyze content performance in Piwik pro, you need to go to the reports section and select Content Performance
